America’s Best Ski Towns

It’s no secret that Bend and Mt. Bachelor make a great combination as a winter destination. So it should come as no surprise that Travel + Leisure would list America’s best ski towns and Bend would be on it.

Great ski towns don’t come a dime a dozen. Part of what makes Bend so special is what you can do after a day on the mountain. Perhaps the most popular activity is to check out Bend’s ever growing craft beer scene. Choose one of Bend’s 12 breweries or start a trek on the Bend Ale Trail. While each brewery and it’s pub offers food in addition to some of the best beer in the United States and the world there are plenty of fabulous dining options that don’t have anything to do with a brewery. Restaurants like Zydeco, Brickhouse, 900 Wall, and Bos Taurus to name a few.

Bend's Ale Trail Makes National News

A March 16 article in USA Today about tourists being drawn to distilleries and breweries gives a couple paragraphs to Bend’s Ale Trail and Boneyard Beer. That is fantastic publicity for the Ale Trail and Bend itself as USA Today has over 3.1 million readers. The excerpt below mentions that all of the breweries are within walking distance of each other but that doesn’t mean you have to walk. There is more than one way to travel the trail that made CraftBeer.com’s top 10 list.

In June 2010, tourism officials in Bend, Ore., launched the Bend Ale Trail, hoping to connect the breweries of the growing craft beer industry in the area. Seven brewers, all within walking distance of one another, form the trail.

Having the trail in place has been a huge boost to the success of Boneyard Beer, a brewery of only 10 employees that launched at the same time the trail began, says Melodee Story, party planner for Boneyard. In the two years it has been open, the brewery has produced 12 different beers available in draft only.

Because of the Bend Ale Trail, Story says, Boneyard Beer is getting recognition from bar owners and customers well beyond what the brewery could have expected.

“It has been huge exposure,” Story says. “It’s given us this jump start, particularly in Oregon.”

That benefit extends beyond the individual breweries, Story says.

“Our town has been hit pretty hard by the economy,” she says. “This Bend Ale Trail is great because it’s creating jobs.”

Bend, Oregon Named One of World's Best Ski Towns

National Geographic has named Bend, Oregon one of the top 25 ski towns in the world. The list includes well known names such as Aspen, Telluride, Jackson, Park City, and Ketchum in the United States and international destinations including Chamonix France, Zermatt Switzerland, Kitzbuhel Austria, Whistler Canada, and Niseko Japan. Some impressive names to say the least.

The towns in the list are not ranked but identified for what sets them apart. Bend is recognized for being the best place for multisport junkies with a taste for microbrews. The author mentions being able to ride the mountain in the morning and mounain bike in the afternoon as a multisport option. Last year, with Mt. Bachelor open on the Fourth of July, skiiers could have also golfed at one of the many local courses, rented a paddle board or kayak on the Deschutes, fished in one of the High Lakes, or wakeboarded one of the reservoirs. The possibilities are seemingly endless even before the usual end of ski season on Memorial Day. Then you can finish the day downtown on Bend’s Ale Trail sampling beer from the ten local breweries.

With so many outdoor activities you can see why Bend is the largest town on this list. Sure it is a great place to visit but once you’ve spent some time here it becomes difficult to leave. Bend's Ale Trail Makes Top 10 List

Are you thirsty for some good beer? Bend has beer. I’m talking about award winning beer brewed right here in Central Oregon. Bend is quickly becoming as much a destination for beer as it is for skiing, mountain biking, fishing and golf. The website CraftBeer.com lists the Bend Ale Trail as one of the top 10 beer trails in the country. Of course there isn’t actually a trail linking all of Bend’s breweries together but there are many options for exploration.

If you like to walk there are eight breweries within walking distance of each other. Stop by the Bend Visitor Center downtown and pick up a map or you can download a Bend Ale Trail app for iPods, iPhones or Android. If you plan on visiting all of the breweries in one day, being able to read the map might be difficult after the first few breweries. Have no fear, there are trail options available that do not require the you to read a map or drive. If you like bikes then the Cycle Pub is a good option.

How often do you get to pedal and drink beer on city streets? Maybe you want to go really old school, like horse drawn carriage old school. The Buckboard, Biscuits and Beer tour will take you to four breweries and feed you lunch.

Do you want to be green but not so green that you have to pedal or ride behind horses? Try the GetIt Shuttle’s Bend Brew Tour. They will drive you around in their alternative energy shuttle. A final guided option is the Bend Brew Bus. However you decide to tour Bend’s Breweries, enjoy.

Bend Brewers win Awards

The Great American Beer Festival was held this past weekend in Denver, Colorado. This year 15 Oregon Brewers brought home Medals including three from Bend. Silver Moon Brewing won a gold medal for their Dark Side Stout in the Foreign Style Stout category. They also won a Bronze Medal for their Legacy Lager in the American or International Style Pislner category. Deschutes Brewery took home three medals; a gold for their Bourbon Murder a barrel-aged strong stout, a bronze for their Down ‘n Dirty IPA and a bronze for their Pinot Jubel barrel-aged beer. The third brewery from Bend to take home a medal was Bend Brewing Company. They were awarded a bronze medal for their Ching-Ching which is an American style sour ale. Sadly, the only winning beer that I have sampled is the Legacy Lager from Silver Moon. Perhaps I need to branch out a little more from my usual ale or wheat beers.

Winning a medal at the Great American Beer Festival is quite an accomplishment. In its 30 years of existence the festival has grown from 24 breweries and 47 beers to 466 breweries and 2400 beers. One of the more surprising winners to me this year was Pabst Brewing Company in the Large Brewing Company Brewer of the Year category. I suppose these large brewing companies deserve to be represented at a competition such as this but I would have never guessed that Pabst would win an award.

Believe it or not, Becky actually has a connection with the Pabst family. A few years ago she listed the Sunriver vacation home of one of the Pabst heirs. Yes, the house did sell and no, we didn’t get any free beer.
